Chinese stocks had an eventful week last week — with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index hitting a five-year low of about 2,650 points on Feb. 5, before edging up to end the week at 2,865.90. A slide in Hong Kong-listed Chinese shares on Feb. 9, however, proved that investors may still have lingering concerns on the prospects of Chinese stocks in the new year. As the festive season gets underway, Redmond Wong, market strategist at investment firm Saxo, sees several opportunities to play the market. Boom in green transformation Beyond the traditional sectors, Saxo's Wong is watching an up-and-coming area in China: energy security and a green transformation. Data from the International Energy Agency shows that the Asian giant's clean-energy sectors contributed 11.4 trillion Chinese yuan ($1.6 trillion) to the Chinese economy in 2023, up 30% year-on-year.

HANOI, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Apple (AAPL.O) supplier Luxshare Precision Industry Co (002475.SZ) has been awarded a license to invest an additional $330 million in its plant in Vietnam's northern province of Bac Giang, raising the total investment to $504 million, provincial authorities said. The facility is expected to be completed in 12 to 24 months, it added. China-based Luxshare, one of Apple's main AirPods makers, started investing in Vietnam since 2019. Its additional investment in the country comes as other manufacturers seek to further diversify production away from China. Earlier this year, another Apple supplier, Foxconn, set up a new factory in central Vietnam and raised its investment in the country by $250 million to make electric vehicles and telecom parts.

Apple wants to cut its ties with chip designer Qualcomm but despite years of work and billions of dollars, the company hasn’t been able to build a wireless chip in-house. WSJ reporter Aaron Tilley joins host Zoe Thomas to explain Apple’s spectacular failure in this effort. Many Apple customers may not be familiar with Luxshare Precision or its leader Grace Wang, but they likely own its handiwork. Along with other Apple contractors, Luxshare manufactures AirPods, the Apple Watch and the recently released iPhone 15, including the top-of-the-line iPhone Pro Max. Luxshare is also the assembler of Apple’s first mixed-reality headset, due to reach consumers next year.

Apple has become a revenue-generating machine thanks in large part to products made in China. Apple's revenue from products made in China could drop to less than a third of overall revenue. AdvertisementAdvertisementApple's dependence on China for manufacturing could drastically drop within the next five years, with revenue from products manufactured in the country projected to plummet to less than a third, analysts said. Deepwater Asset Management's managing partner Gene Munster and research analyst Brian Baker predicted on Monday that revenue from Apple products manufactured in China could drop from an estimated 40-45% today to 25-30% by 2027. AdvertisementAdvertisementIndia increasingly looks like it will provide that alternative, Munster and Baker said, with around half of the revenue projected to be lost from products manufactured in China estimated to go to the sub-continent state.

REUTERS/Ann Wang/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) Chinese supplier Luxshare Precision Industry (002475.SZ) is producing three models of iPhone 15 series this year, and the business has doubled in a year, Luxshare's chairwoman said on Thursday. Luxshare has increased the production types and numbers of Apple's iPhone products in recent years, Wang added. "Luxshare is continuing to expand its production capacity in China to meet Apple's needs," Wang said, adding the company built a new plant in Kunshan last year to support the development and mass production of iPhone. "The fact that Luxshare Precision can have this scale this year is inseparable from Apple's support," Wang told the Paper. Founded in 2004, Luxshare became an Apple supplier in 2011 and has steadily moved up the hardware giant's value chain, from making connector cables for the iPhone and Macbook to manufacturing Airpods.

Analysts say its new product launches could mark a first step in the company's come-back efforts to rival Apple. "It (Huawei) can manage the psychological expectations of the target consumer group before Apple's press conference," said Ivan Lam, an analyst at Counterpoint. Sino-U.S. friction has worsened in recent years as Washington tries to restrict China's access to key technologies including cutting-edge chip technology, and Beijing looks to reduce its reliance on American tech. The U.S. Commerce Department said late Thursday it's working to obtain more information "on the character and composition" of the new Huawei chip that may violate trade restrictions. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Air Force One the U.S. government is trying to get more information about the Huawei chip.

Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW), the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major Apple supplier, dropped about 0.7%, outpacing a fall of about 0.3% in the benchmark index (.TWII). China could well expand its curbs on officials' use of iPhones, said Allen Huang, executive director of Mega International Investment Services Corp in Taipei. In China, Luxshare Precision Industry (002475.SZ), maker of connector cables for the iPhone and MacBook as well as AirPods, which also owns factories capable of making iPhones, fell 1.5%. Japanese chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron (8035.T) dropped 4% on Friday. Nearly a fifth of Apple's revenue is generated in China, where thousands of workers are employed by the company and its suppliers.

Some analysts feel the Huawei moves could be a first step in comeback efforts by China's "national champion" to rival Apple. By contrast with the hit for Apple suppliers, Huawei's extended recent gains. Reuters GraphicsSCOPE OF CURBS UNCLEARIt was not immediately clear how wide China's iPhone curbs are, but one employee at an affected state-owned enterprise (SOEs) in the capital said they extended to visitors. However, Canalys analyst Nicole Peng said Huawei could present a greater threat to domestic peers, such as Honor, which had benefited from Huawei's woes. The U.S. Commerce Department is seeking more information on the "character and composition" of the new Huawei chip that may violate trade curbs, it said on Thursday.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. It said it sources most of its rare earths from China but is seeking alternative sources in Vietnam and Australia and plans to develop a processing facility in Vietnam. A similar request from clients prompted another Chinese magnet maker, Magsound, to decide to open a factory in Vietnam in the first half of next year, the two people said. In April, Australia's Strategic Materials (ASM.AX) signed a deal with a Vietnamese refiner that committed to supplying rare earths for export to South Korea.

Apple chose a Chinese firm to assemble its Vision Pro thanks to its openness to "crazy ideas." A Chinese firm responsible for assembling Apple's Vision Pro had a vote of confidence from the tech giant thanks to its willingness to test "crazy" ideas, a new report says. Luxshare, a contract manufacturer, has built close ties with Apple as the latter prepares to launch its mixed-reality headset. The Vision Pro is Apple's biggest hardware launch since the release of the iPhone in 2007 and set to be its riskiest in recent years. Apple and Luxshare did not immediately respond to Insider' request for comment outside regular working hours.

Apple has long depended on China for manufacturing, but the relationship is getting complex. Two recent developments suggest India's push to become a viable alternative to China — and benefit Apple — are mixed. "Foxconn has determined it will not move forward on the joint venture with Vedanta," Foxconn said in a statement to Reuters. That's a critical blow to Modi, who set out chip manufacturing as a strategic part of his ambitions to level up India. Vedanta chairman Anil Agarwal tweeted that the joint venture meant "India's own Silicon Valley is a step closer now."

July 3 (Reuters) - Apple (AAPL.O) has been forced to make major cuts to production forecasts for its Vision Pro augmented-reality headset due to design complexity, the Financial Times reported on Monday citing people with direct knowledge of the process. Chinese contract manufacturer Luxshare, Apple's only assembler of the device, was preparing to make fewer than 400,000 units of Vision Pro in 2024, the newspaper said, citing two people close to Apple and Luxshare. Apple had an earlier internal sales target of 1 million units of the headset in the first 12 months, as per the FT report. A major difficulty in the production process is the manufacturing of the micro-OLED displays for the device, FT reported. Apple and Luxshare did not immediately respond to an email asking for specifics of the challenges.

Bad news for Apple: it's forecast to sell far fewer units of its $3,500 Vision Pro than planned. The FT reported that the new headset was facing production challenges in China. Apple is being forced to slash production forecasts for the Vision Pro because of supply-chain difficulties and technical woes, per an FT report. But the complexity of its design and production issues in China means it could hit less than half that target, per the outlet. The FT reported that Apple has been dissatisfied with the production of the screens.

Ted Cannis, a senior executive at Ford, told the Financial Times in December that there is a "large-scale rethinking of logistics operations" across the auto supply chain. "The supply chain is going to be the focus of this decade," Cannis said. Among the companies Apple is relying on to make the Vision Pro is Taiwan's Foxconn — which is the main supplier shifting its supply chain away from China. The move was made after China's COVID-19 lockdowns rocked supply chain and production timelines, but prices are the real driving reason behind the move. "Right now, robustness of our supply chain also needs to be considered to ensure the stable procurement of parts."

Apple's diversifying supply chains away from China, but it's still using Chinese firms to make the Vision Pro. Apple's Vision Pro has been exciting investors since its reveal, sending the company's shares soaring. Tech giant Apple has been trying to diversify its supply chains away from China — but it appears there's no getting away from the manufacturing powerhouse. According to Wellsenn, the list shows eight Chinese companies involved in the making of Apple's Vision Pro headset. And despite the internet's derision about the gadget's hefty price tag and its goofy aesthetics, the Vision Pro itself has been exciting investors.

The investment bank called the plan, known by its Production-Linked Incentive Schemes, as a "substantial opportunity" for Greater China tech firms. The initiative incentivizes foreign companies to start manufacturing in India and encourages local firms to expand their production and exports there. Goldman said tech represents more than half of the opportunity. Under the IT hardware initiative, for instance, Greater China tech firms represent 76% of potential capital expenditure contribution. Stock picks Goldman named two buy-rated stocks that it said stand to benefit from India's big manufacturing plans.
One source said Foxconn will invest more than $200 million in the new India AirPod plant in the southern Indian state of Telangana. The decision to set up production in India was requested by Apple, according to the source. Apple and its key suppliers have been shifting production away from China, where strict COVID-19 curbs disrupted Foxconn's biggest iPhone factory last year. Foxconn said on Wednesday it would ramp up investment outside China to meet customer demand and lower its reliance on China for production. It was not immediately clear whether Foxconn's production plan would have impact on current AirPod suppliers, including Luxshare Precision Industry (002475.SZ).
Adding impetus to the move is the increasing cost of labour in China, expanding U.S. restrictions on high-tech-related trade with China, and tit-for-tat tariffs from a Sino-U.S. trade war that triggered a past wave of Chinese investment in Vietnam. "Enquiries from Chinese firms about manufacturing investment in Vietnam grew exponentially in the last quarter of last year," said Michael Chan, senior director of leasing at industrial real estate specialist BW Industrial Development. "Chinese investment has also increased remarkably," he said. Chinese firms also experience longer times to obtain staff visas and work permits, said Filippo Bortoletti, who heads the Vietnamese unit of investment consultancy Dezan Shira. "Chinese companies move here mostly to serve their clients who moved earlier," said BW Industrial Development's Chan.
Apple CEO Tim Cook presents the new iPhone 14 at an Apple event at their headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. September 7, 2022. Top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a blog post on Friday that Apple plans to release "low-end" and "high-end" second-generation augmented reality/mixed reality headsets in 2025. Apple has not yet announced or even acknowledged the existence of plans to launch a virtual reality headset. The first model is expected to cost about $3,000 according to Bloomberg, which means Kuo's report of a future "low-end" model could signal that a more affordable version is on the way. It sells, for example, the high-end Apple Watch Ultra but also more affordable Apple Watch and Apple Watch SE series devices.

A worker told Rest of World what working at a Foxconn factory where iPhones are assembled in China is like. The worker said he saw a colleague have his pay lowered for spending too long drinking. Nicknamed Hunter, the worker told Rest of World he felt he was stripped of his "rights and dignity." Hunter told Rest of World he had a strict hour-long lunch break and if he had to go to the toilets, he would need to make up for the lost time. He told Rest of World he hoped not to be back at Foxconn for the next mass production of iPhones, but he couldn't be "absolutely sure."
Jan 17 (Reuters) - Taiwan's Foxconn (2317.TW) has appointed Michael Chiang as the new boss for its iPhone assembly business after a tumultuous year in China, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Chiang replaces longtime leader Wang Charng-yang as head of the iPhone assembly division, the Bloomberg report said. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Chiang's appointment is part of Foxconn Chairman Young Liu's efforts to elevate younger executives to maintain the company's supply chain leadership in the face of growing competition from Chinese contenders, the Bloomberg report said. [1/4] The BYD Atto 3 EV car is displayed at the 39 Thailand International Motor Expo, in Bangkok, Thailand, November 30, 2022. The company announced in September it would build an EV assembly plant in Thailand with annual capacity of 150,000 cars from 2024. Talks are underway to select a site for the Vietnam plant, said the sources, who declined to be named because the discussions are confidential. The Vietnam plant will export components to the assembly plant to be built in Thailand, one source said. That would pose a direct challenge to VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker that began selling cars in 2019 and plans to expand in the United States and Europe.
